LENT DAY 3: DON’T DECEIVE YOURSELF, MERCY IS BETTER THAN FASTING. (Homily for February 12, 2016. Friday after Ash Wednesday)

Bible Study:  Isaiah 58, 1 to 9. Matthew 9, 14 to 15).

Fasting is very good, it is something we do to put our bodies to check, something that helps us grow in spirit, acquire new virtues and get closer to God. Fasting helps us pray better as we tend to be more attentive with an empty stomach than we are when full.

Because fasting is self-punishment, it bolsters our faith; we have this feeling that God will PITY US when he sees how much pain we are going through by fasting. Fasting makes us believe that God will answer us sharply sharply so when we are really going through a tough time, or when we have a great intention to seek from God, we naturally opt for fasting.

But then as you and I have observed, there are times fasting does not bring about the desired results! Isn’t it? Isaiah tells us the reason in today’s first reading. Fasting does not work when the practice mercy is lacking. You waste your time fasting when there is unforgiveness and bitterness in your heart. Fasting is useless when you oppress your housemaid for instance or treat people as if they are rags. You go about quarrelling and fighting with people and you think your fasting will work? No Way!

In fact, there are times fasting is completely UNNECESSARY! When Jesus and his disciples were accused of not fasting, he responded with a parable. To this day, many still do not understand the words of Jesus. By calling himself the “bridegroom”, Jesus is indirectly telling them that HE IS GOD and where God is, there is no need to fast. God is love and Love is greater than sacrifice.

Stop deceiving yourself saving your meals in the name of fasting only to eat, eat and eat later in the day. Show love today, practice mercy, be kind and generous, lend a helping hand, give bread to the hungry, cover the naked, shelter the homeless, give others gifts and your prayers will be answered faster than they would even if you fast from now till tomorrow.

Let us Pray:
Lord Jesus, help me realise that true fasting is that which enables me to love and care for others as myself rather than merely depriving myself of food. Amen.

God bless you. Good morning. Be Happy. Live Positive. Have Faith. It is well with you.
