GOD WORKS IN MYSTERIOUS WAYS. (Homily for December 19, 2016. Monday of the 4th Week of Advent.)

Bible Study: Judges 13, 2 to 25 and Luke 1, 5 to 25.

Who can predict the mind of God? Nobody. Who knows what will happen tomorrow? Nobody. It really amazes me how science attempts to take the place of God in predicting the future simply based on repeated patterns in the past. Science studies nature and the observable phenomena that we can see and science would tell you that there are laws in the universe such as law of gravity, law of motion, law of this and law of that, but it is incapable of telling who created those laws. I bring you Good News today that He who created those laws has the power to change them on your behalf.

This is what we find playing out in today’s first reading as well as our Gospel passage. Two women who were passed the age of child bearing, two women who are no longer qualified according to the scientific law of pregnancy suddenly were able to conceive. And that was not all, even the sons they bore became extraordinary men. God acts in such a way that at the end, he alone receives the full credit.

As St. Paul makes clear to us: “God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, things that are not, to reduce to nothing things that are, so that no one might boast in the presence of God.” 1st Corinthians 1, 27 to 29. To shame Goliath, God chose David.

It is precisely when all hope is lost that God shows up. It is just at that point when you have tried everything possible and nothing seems to be working anymore that God surprises you with a special visitation. No one can predict the mind of God. As one author said, “God writes straight on jagged lines.”

And this should give us great hope and consolation. The fact that you are presently experiencing barrenness in one way or another in any aspect of your life does not mean that this is the end of your story. It might just be that God is preparing something special for you. There is no need looking at others or comparing yourself with them because you are different and unique.

Zechariah prayed for many years for a child and did not get an answer. When eventually the answer came, Zachariah forgot what he had been praying for. He felt that God had decided not to grant him a child anymore. His doubt was obvious to the Angel and so he was punished with dumbness. What is that which I have been praying for? Have I reached a point of doubt?

Let us Pray: Lord Jesus, strengthen my faith when times are hard. Amen.

Be Happy. Live Positive. Have Faith. It is well with you. God bless you. Happy new week.

Fr. Abu.
