In Moments of Sorrow and Pain, Prayer is the Key.

Homily for June 7, 2017

Sad moments occur in our lives to remind us of the fact that we are not yet home, they put us on guard and give us more reasons to draw close to God. The question is not whether I will ever experience disappointment in life, it is about HOW would I react in the face of such difficult moments?

Today’s first reading presents us with the example of two persons; Tobit and Sarah who were badly insulted that they wished they would just die. At times, words (insults) could more destructive to a person than actual physical beating.

In the case of Tobit, he was insulted by his own very wife; the woman who was supposed to be the love of his life, his safe haven and the light of his eyes at his moment of blindness. You know that the book of Proverbs 21:9 says: “It is better to live on top of the roof than to share a house with a quarrelsome wife.”

The truth is that some women have used their mouth to send their husbands to their early graves. As Christians, we should not know that our mouths are meant for blessing not for insults.

In the case of Sarah, she was accused and insulted by her father’s maids of being responsible for the deaths of her husbands after she had been given in marriage seven times.

She actually took a rope and locked herself in the upper room of the house intending to hang herself and die. Thank God, she had a rethink and decided to submit to God in prayer. Taking one’s life has never and will never solve any problem.

In moments of pain and sorrow, God is the only solution. He is the only ear that deserves to hear my plight. Prayer is the key! It can unlock any door and solve any difficulty.

Just as God heard Tobit and Sarah, God will hear me. I will go down on my knees and cry to the God who created me. I will not be faithless like the Sadducees in the Gospel passage who think that there is nothing beyond this physical world.

Let us pray: Lord Jesus, when my eyes become red, take it as a signal and come to my rescue. Amen.

Be Happy. Live Positive. Have Faith. It is well with you. God bless you. (Wednesday of the 9th Week in Ordinary Time. Bible Study: Tobit 3:1-11,16-17 and Mark 12:18-27).
