Homily for April 14, 2018.
“They were frightened, but he said to them, ‘It is I; do not be afraid.’”
John 6:19-20.
No matter how bad things turn out in our lives, we must never forget the
words of Jesus in Matthew 28:20 “I am with you always, to the close of the age.”
Even in the midst of the chaos, when it seems as if our world is turned up-side-down,
when we feel as though our prayers are no longer working, God is right there
with us.
As the legendary Christian Musician, Don Moen sang: “God will make a way
where there seems to be no way.” God made a way for the apostles when it seemed
as though they were going to meet their death on the sea. By walking on water,
Jesus meant to say: “I am on top of the situation.”
Even in our first reading a situation arose which seemed to disrupt their
communal living. Some people were feeling cheated from the daily distribution
of food. Outwardly, this looked like a negative situation but from this ugly
scenario came the selection of the first set of deacons in the church.
Dear friends, what is it that currently frightens you? Do you feel as
though your circumstances are getting out of hand? Stay calm, stop analysing
the situation in your head, start focusing on God. Try to picture Jesus walking
on water (your current situation) coming to meet you.
If you find it difficult to see the hand of God in your situation, then start
by telling yourself that something good
will come out of it. Think of your chaos as some form of examination you have
to write in other to get promoted to another class in your relationship with
God. It is just a test and it will not remain like this forever.
Change is the only permanent quality of life on earth. As the world
rotates, day time comes and night time take over, so also things are changing
either for or against your favour but no matter how bad things are or may
become, trust that God is right there with you following you every step of the
way.
I so much like the words of St. Paul in Romans 8:28 “We know that in
everything God works for good with those who love him, who are called according
to his purpose.” God is always working for our good no matter how tough things
may be. Personally, I can say some of the best lessons life has taught me came amidst
tears, sweat and pain.
God cannot abandon you. Why? God cannot abandon himself and you are part
of God, you not only have God in you, even your very body is his temple. So trust
God. Do not let your circumstances drive you away from God, instead, use them
as personal examples to teach yourself that God’s power is unlimited. It may seem
like hell right now, don’t worry, just don’t give up, don’t fall into sin, no,
no, no, you can never justify one evil with another. Stay calm, one day, you will
tell your story with a smile!
Let us
Pray: Lord Jesus, just as you walked on water, you are walking on my situation
now, clear my eyes of fear so that I can see you. Cleanse my heart from all
negative thoughts. Amen.
Happy Weekend. Be Happy. Live
Positive. Have Faith. It is well with you. God bless you. (Saturday of the
