Thursday
14th November 2019. Bible Study: Wisdom 7:22-8:1, Psalm 119 and Luke
17:20-25.
“For
wisdom is more mobile than any motion; because of her pureness, she pervades
and penetrates all things. For she is a breath of the power of God, and a pure
emanation of the glory of the Almighty; therefore nothing defiled gains
entrance into her.” (Wisdom 7:24-26)
Today’s
first reading perfectly describes the essence of spiritual wisdom as against worldly
wisdom. Wisdom here implies holiness in relating with God, beneficent and humane
in relating with people. As the book of wisdom says, to be wise is to be unpolluted
by immoral thoughts and sensual desires.
Wisdom is
spotless and undefiled by worldly corruption. For God loves nothing so much as
the man who lives with wisdom. When your heart is pure, God comes to dwell
there making your heart another heaven. How happy is the man who has God living
right inside his heart! He is always at peace, always happy and always thankful.
To be wise
is to live grateful for the past, confident for the present and free of anxiety
about the future. When we have God within us, what have we to fear? This is the
point Jesus makes to the Pharisees in our Gospel passage who asked about the
coming of the kingdom of God.
Whenever
something weird happens, you hear people say things like “end time has come” but
as Jesus makes very clear today: “The kingdom of God is not coming with signs
to be observed.” True to Jesus’ prediction, many prophets have arisen with various
claims just to gain popularity or gather followers. Jesus warns us: “Do not go,
do not follow them.”
In truth, as
Jesus says: “The kingdom of God is in your midst.” The kingdom of God is what
happens when I make my heart pure enough for God to dwell. The kingdom of God
is when I allow God to reign in my life; when I follow His commandments when I walk
according to His statutes.
The
kingdom of God is when I love my neighbours as myself and allow this love
spread. The kingdom of God is me helping the poor and needy, treating people just
as I expect to be treated. Remember that song: “the time to be happy is now,
the place to be happy is here and the way to be happy is to make someone happy
and we’ll have a little heaven down here.”
Let us
pray: Lord Jesus, make me wiser each day. Amen.
Be Happy.
Live Positive. Have Faith. It is well with you. God bless you. (Thursday of the
32nd Week in Ordinary Time. Bible Study: Wisdom 7:22-8:1, Psalm 119 and Luke
17:20-25).
