The Gift of our Speech.

Homily for Thursday 9th January 2020. Read 1st John 4:19-5:4, Psalm 72 and Luke 4:14-22

_“And all spoke well of him, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth.” *(Luke 4:22)*_

As human beings, one of the ways we share in the image of God is our ability to produce intelligible and meaningful words with our mouths. Our words are more than mere sounds, they are part of the creation process. Just as God spoke creation into existence, our words can change lives, alter destinies, and shape the course of history.

Once words are spoken, they never return the mouth. They go out and make things begin to happen. The earth has not stopped listening since God spoke to it at creation. Words can either create or destroy. We must be very careful about what we say, how we say it, when we say it and to whom we say it regardless of how we feel at any moment.

In today’s Gospel passage, Jesus spoke so well in the Synagogue that all the people were wondering at the gracious words with proceeded from his mouth. (Luke 4:22). Unlike the Scribes and Pharisees, Jesus taught with authority, with confidence. He made use of parables very familiar to the people such that they were able to see meaning in everything Jesus was saying.

The question is: “What kind of words do I use? How do I speak?” Do my words uplift or bring people down? Do I say the truth?

St. John tells us in today’s first reading: “If anyone says: ‘I Love God’ and yet, hates his brother, he is a liar”. It is not enough to say the right words at the right time, we must be sure to back up our words with action. Words are powerful but actions speak louder.

Let us Pray: Lord Jesus, teach me to use the right words always. Amen

Be Happy. Live Positive. Have Faith. It is well with you. God bless you. (Thursday after the Epiphany of Jesus. Bible Study: 1st John 4:19-5:4, Psalm 72 and Luke 4:14-22).
