Homily for March 7, 2018.
“Give heed to the statutes and the ordinances which I teach you,
and do them; that you may live, and go in and take possession of the land which
the LORD, the God of your fathers, gives you.” Deuteronomy 4:1.
We live in digital age, a world of limitless possibilities; a
world where knowledge about any subject is so readily available at the snap of
one’s finger. The classroom has been completely revolutionized by the
smartphone. Even without stepping out of your bedroom, you can become a star, a
professional or genius in whatever your interests may be.
Youtube has become a university of some sorts. Google will not
only take you around the world in 3D, it will provide virtually all the pictures,
articles and videos related to any person, town or issue you want to know
about. Then comes WikiHow, the Do-It-Yourself headquarters of the internet.
From how to fly a plane, to how to start a business, to how to become a
President, even to how to prepare your favourite meal, just name it, everything
is right there at your fingertips.
As much as our modern day technology seems to have all the
answers to achieving the life of our dreams, what we often do not realize is
that technology by itself is incapable of moving us an inch further without our
firm and resolute decision to completely follow its instructions to the latter.
For instance, whether we like it or not, if we must achieve what the do-it-yourself
tutorial says, we must literally OBEY EVERY SINGLE COMMAND contained therein, the
only difference is that they are labelled as “Help.”
Dear friends, long before the internet, long before smartphone,
long before life become so complicated, God has already given us the greatest
and simplest do-it-yourself manual, a complete guide on how to achieve the very
best life possible. Just as every application (program or software) comes with its
so called “Help” (which are basically commands and instructions to follow), the
Bible is the greatest “Help” anyone can find regarding the human person.
The most unfortunate reality is that we human beings are rebellious
against God, we pick and choose only that which suits our feelings and do
everything possible to justify our disobedience. We see God’s law as oppressive;
a denial of our freedom but we see those do-it-yourself tutorials as being
really smart. What a contradiction! Can you imagine what would happen if we treat
our technological gadgets the same way we treat the commandments of God?
Do you have a problem with any of the commandments of God? Do
you wish any of them were changed or removed? Then, think twice. Jesus tells us
in Matthew 5, “For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an
iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished.” The key to
achieving the life that God so desires for us is simply to TRUST God enough
that he means well for us by giving us these instructions and OBEY them with
all our mind, with all our heart and with all our soul. It is in our obedience
to God’s instructions that we begin to enjoy the fullness of life.
Let us Pray: Lord Jesus, increase my trust in you and help me to obey.
Amen.
Be Happy.
Live Positive. Have Faith. It is well with you. God bless you. (Wednesday of the 3rd week of
Lent. Bible Study: Deuteronomy 4:1-9 and Matthew
5:17-19).
