Homily for Saturday 17th November 2018
_“And he told them a parable, to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart.” *Luke 18:1*_
Basically, Jesus is telling us today never to give up on our prayers, never to give up on God, never to give up on our Faith even when it seems as if nothing is happening. It is easy to pray when things are moving smoothly but how difficult is it for us to pray when all we get from God is silence!
Prayer is not magic. Prayer is always an appeal to a higher power. We may be the holiest persons on earth, we may fast and pray more than anyone else, we may even go as far as risking our lives to climb the tallest mountains to pray but still, everything depends on God.
God is free to decide whether or not we get what we are praying for. If it is His Will, our prayers will become realities but if it is not His Will or if He doesn’t want it at that particular time, it may seem as if we prayed in vain.
Jesus is telling us today that even when our prayers appear to be ineffective, they are not wasted. Like the widow who continued to come to the unjust judge, Jesus wants us to continue praying until something happens.
In the concluding line of today’s Gospel passage, Jesus asked a question: “When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?” the kind of faith Jesus is referring to is the persevering faith; the faith that does not weaken with time; the faith that remains strong even when things are not moving at all.
Keep praying even when you become a laughing stock. Keep trusting that God cares even when you feel He has gone to sleep on your matter. God never sleeps. At times, God tests our faith by refusing to answer our prayers. God is interested in those who will not give up despite several unanswered prayers.
Never try to rush God. Let Him take His time, Let His Will be done. Be careful of those who come around you and try to make you feel your prayers are not working or that you should visit so and so diabolic venues for quick solutions. Many have become entangled with demonic powers all because of their attempt to get quick and immediate answers. Don’t fall a victim.
Be Patient with God. Keep praying until something happens.
Let us pray: Lord Jesus, give me the grace to pull through when the going becomes tough or when my prayers are not heard. Amen.
Be Happy. Live Positive. Have Faith. It is well with you. God bless you. (Saturday of the 32nd Week in Ordinary Time. Bible Study: 3 John 5-8, Psalm 112:1-6 and Luke 18:1-8).
