LENT DAY 26: AT THE HEART OF EVERY SIN IS A REJECTION OF GOD. (Homily for March 10, 2016. Thursday of the 4th Week of Lent)

Bible Study: Exodus 32, 7 to 14 and John 5, 31 to 47.

Very recently, I saw a programme on National Geographic channel which got me thinking. It was one the “Brain Games” series. The host of the show who apparently did not seem to have any religious beliefs did try to prove by series of experiments that the idea of belief in God is a way our brain tries to cope with reality. According to him, when we lack control over a particular situation, we begin to imagine things that are not there and we shift attention almost immediately to a higher power or something greater than us.

At the bottom line of man’s rejection of God is the fact that no one has ever seen God. Just at the people of Israel rejected the invisible God and pressurized Aaron to fashion a golden calf which they could see, modern man today continues to reject God simply on the basis that God is beyond what any scientific experiment can examine. In other words, man has not changed a single bit. We are not much different from the generation that left Egypt thousands of years ago and just as those people rejected God and worshipped a golden calf, sacrificed to it and rose to partake in sensualities, mankind today rejects God, denies his existence and worships visible human inventions instead.

At the height of our rejection of God is a rejection of the moral code. That is why our world today is witnessing such an alarming rate of immorality; look at our modern day fashion, our music, our movies, look at newspaper headlines. People have even become tired of just rejecting God’s commandments regarding bodily purity, they now even go beyond the level of animals to engage in homosexual unions, bestiality and all kinds of evil.

Based on their rejection of God, the people of Israel were doomed for destruction but then in Moses, they had an intercessor who was able to plead for God’s mercy. Moses did a perfect job in pleading with God to the extent that God himself repented of the evil he had planned. Again like these people, mankind today deserves total destruction based on our rejection of God but then, we have in Jesus an intercessor even greater than Moses whose blood on the cross pleads continuously on our behalf.

In today’s Gospel passage we hear Jesus saying: “I know that you have not the love of God within you. I have come in my father’s name and you do not receive me… if you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote of me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words.”

Dear friends, the long and short of it all is that each time we sin, we are rejecting God by rejecting his authority over our lives and because he has taken us for his children, we attract his wrath by our sinfulness. Jesus is our advocate with the father, he is the new Moses who pleads on our behalf. He is our hope of reconciliation. Let us approach his throne of mercy today to ask for pardon and return to God. Science will not get us anywhere. What is our gain if we worship the golden calf of modern day technology and offer our bodies to immorality in the name of enlightenment only to die and perish forever in hell?

Let us Pray:
Lord Jesus, I worship you with my whole mind, body and soul. May I not be carried away by the multitude who have rejected you in our world today. Amen.

God bless you. Good morning. Be Happy. Live Positive. Have Faith. It is well with you.
