_“But when
you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind, and you
will be blessed, because they cannot repay you.” *(Luke 14:13-14)*_
In our
country today, the success of an event is judged by the calibre of people who
attend it, the number of cars parked in front of the event centre, the number
of dollars splashed on the floor and even the size of the souvenir. In a
country where many are bearing managing to feed once a day, there is no weekend
devoid of such lavish parties.
Jesus is
asking us today to be creative when it comes to throwing parties. You don’t have
to paint the town red to celebrate that occasion, invite the poor instead. Go
to an orphanage, visit a ward in a hospital, gather the hungry children in the
street, splash that money on them. Life is all about innovation. Do something
different.
The truth
is that when we give to the poor, we are simply doing to others what God
himself has done to us. St. Paul tells us in our first reading that we have
benefited immensely from the mercy of God. Freely we have received. Freely, we
must give.
Let us
pray: Lord Jesus, give me a heart that considers the poor. Amen.
Be Happy.
Live Positive. Have Faith. It is well with you. God bless you. (Monday of the
31st week in Ordinary Time. Bible Study: Romans 11:29-36, Psalm 69 and Luke
14:12-14).
