The Wisdom of Noah

Friday 13th November 2020. Read Bible Study: 2 John 4-9, Psalm 119:1-16 and Luke 17:26-37 

“As it was in the days of Noah, so will it be in the days of the Son of man. They ate, they drank, they married, they were given in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all.” (Luke 17:26-27)

Looking at this statement of Jesus in today’s Gospel passage, one might be tempted to wonder if Jesus is against eating and drinking or getting married. Is it the case that the only way to prepare for the coming of the Son of Man is by fasting perpetually? Of course, this cannot be the case.

However, as Noah built an Ark in obedience to God’s command long before the rain began, Jesus is recommending to us the wisdom of Noah. The best preparation for that day which shall take us by surprise is our obedience to the commandments of God.

In our first reading, St. John tells us that many deceivers will come with false accounts who would try to take us far away from God with false teachings. They will bring all kinds of predictions about the future or the end of the world. We must not follow them. For instance, not long ago I saw a viral tweet on Twitter reading: “Jesus is my Saviour, not my religion.”

Of course, at the background of such heretical doctrines are the evils of false prophets (wolves in sheep clothing) who are so rampart today. Indeed, many have developed phobia for whatever is considered “religion.”

We know the world would come to an end, but what should bother us the most is what would be our fate when the end comes. What matters is not knowing when it will happen, it is being at right with God by obeying His Word which is summed up in the command to love. St. John tells us in the first reading: “Let us love one another. For this is love; that we walk according to his commandments.”

Let us pray:  Lord Jesus, help me to get ready so that whenever the D-day comes, it will not be a shock to me. Amen.
