Bible
Study: Galatians 1, 6 to 12 and Luke 10, 25 to 37.
The story
of the Good Samaritan is one that we have probably heard over and over again
but there is one aspect of the story that we do not pay much attention to. And that
is the aspect that concerns us. “Go and do likewise.”
By telling
us to go and likewise, Jesus is saying that we should start looking out for our
“neighbours” among persons who have been hurt and beaten by the challenges of
life. If only we pay close attention to the difficulties encountered by people,
we would see many areas and way we can be Good Samaritans ourselves. It all
begins by putting yourself in the shoes of your fellow human being and then
trying to see how you can be of help to him to her.
Go and do
likewise means that the story is not just for entertainment. Helping others is
not some leisure activity we do when we are in the mood or when we feel like,
it is a COMMAND. If all we do is to amuse ourselves and gossip about people’s
misfortunes, then there is no reason to say we are Christians.
Jesus
Christ himself played Good Samaritan when he decided to be born as a man to
live among us and die for our sake. He could have remained in heaven analysing
the situation of things amongst humanity but he came to help out. We too should
do likewise.
Today we
remember a Saint who died at the age of 24, yet is ranked amongst the doctors
of the church, that is, she is of the likes of St. Augustine, St. Thomas
Aquinas and so on. Her name is Saint Therese of the child Jesus. The only book
she wrote was her own autobiography which was published after her death. In it,
she speaks of how we can make our way to heaven by the little unnoticed things
we do. While on her death bed, St. Therese said: “My heaven will be spent doing
good on earth.”
Let us
pray:
Lord
Jesus, give me a heart that pushes me to action immediately at the misfortune
of my neighbour like the Good Samaritan. Amen.
Be Happy.
Live Positive. Have Faith. It is well with you. God bless you.
