RENDERING ACCOUNTS. (Homily for November 16, 2016. Wednesday of the 33rd week in Ordinary Time.)

Bible Study:  Revelations 4, 1 to 11 and Luke 19, 11 to 28.

The key to understanding today’s Gospel passage lies in its introduction by Luke: “Jesus proceeded to tell a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately.”

In other words, the purpose of the parable is to show that the kingdom of God, otherwise known as the end of the world or the second coming of Christ is something that will NOT happen very soon. Just as we noted on Sunday, our concern should not be to speculate when the world would end and we would do ourselves a disservice by becoming idle all in the name of waiting for the end of the world.

In the parable, ten servants were given ten coins. Each servant had a coin and the master told them to trade with these coins till his return. One of them decided not to do anything. This particular servant represents those who hide their talents, those who would rather prefer to remain idle and do nothing all because of their anticipation for the end of the world.

Dear friends, let us get busy with our lives and our talents while we wait for the end of the world. Yes, the world will surely end. But in the meantime, make use of what you have. Use your talents, opportunities and life circumstances to spread the word of God. Increase the faith among fellow believers. Whenever God so decides to call you, let it be that you can render an account of how you used your life, your gifts and talents to win souls for him.

As we look forward to sharing in the heavenly worship as described by John in today’s first reading, let us not give up our faith and hope. Let us never get into despair or assume that God does not care for us anymore. Like the master who travelled leaving the servants behind with his talents, life on earth may sometimes seem as if God is absent but the truth is that He is always present. He sees everything we do with our lives every moment. Just trust him and carry on.

Let us Pray: Lord Jesus, help me to make the best use of my little time here. Amen.

Be Happy. Live Positive. Have Faith. It is well with you. God bless you.
Fr. Abu
