WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM JESUS? (Homily for July 04, 2016. Monday of the 14th week in Ordinary Time.)

Bible Study:  Hosea 2, 14 to 20. Matthew 9, 18 to 26.

“My daughter has just died; but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.” The ruler came to Jesus knowing fully well that his daughter was dead. But, instead of him to take her for burial, he came straight to Jesus. He came to Jesus because he believed there was still something Jesus could do.

Dear friends, what is your story? Whatever the case, it is probably not worse than death. Consider the fact that even death wasn’t too difficult for Jesus to handle and use that as a leap of faith. It is never too late to call on him.

On his way to the ruler’s house, behold a woman with the issue of blood. She lacked the courage to meet Jesus face to face. But, she believed that all she needed from Jesus to get her healing was just a touch. So she went for the touch and it worked for her.

Faith works by expectation. The ruler came to Jesus expecting him to bring back his daughter to life. His mind was fixed on seeing his daughter live again. The woman with haemorrhage came to Jesus expecting her healing. She had already set her mind on the outcome even before she approached Jesus.

If we were to be honest with ourselves, a lot of times, we pray so hard but we expect little or nothing. Deep down within us, we just believe things are going to go from bad to worse and because our minds aren’t fixed on seeing the things we are praying for, we eventually get only what we were expecting.

I guess you still remember the story of a village that suffered from a drought. One, day the entire village decided to gather at the market square to pray for rain. When they all arrived, they noticed only one small child came with an umbrella. They had come to pray but none expected to see a drop of rain.

Hosea today tells us how God wants to enter into a permanent covenant relationship with us and he uses the language of a husband and wife. “I will espouse you in faithfulness and you shall know the Lord.” Just as a husband has certain expectations from his wife and the wife also her expectations, we too by virtue of that covenant seal also have right to expect certain things from God. This should boost our confidence when we approach God in prayer.

Nevertheless, we must not forget that God also has certain expectations from us too.

Let us Pray:
Lord Jesus, for whom nothing is difficult or impossible, I come before you this morning with my heart set already in expectation because I know you love me and you will grant what I ask. I refuse allow my reason become an obstacle to my believing. Amen.

Good morning. Be Happy. Live Positive. Have Faith. It is well with you. Happy new week.
